Tux 101: Body Types
SHORT AND THIN
Go with a 1,2, or 3 button single-breasted coat. Stay away
from double-breasted coats (they look better on taller-
framed gentleman) and 4 or 5-button coats (look better on
taller gentleman). Consider having your tailor add some
shoulder padding to give you a broader look (Note: this
option is not available with renting).
SHORT AND BROAD
You want the jacket to button closer to the waistline. Don't
go with a four or five button coat; try staying with a one or
two button. If you are a little thicker around the waist,
perhaps you can have you tailor add just a little bit (yes,
only a little) of shoulder padding to create more of a V-
look (Note: this option is not available with renting). A
shawl collar coat will look very appealing and streamline
your look. Double-breasted coats are a "no-no" for you.
TALL AND THIN
You are the luckiest of all body types when it comes to
formal wear! You can get away with just about anything ...
1-button, 2-button, 3-button, 4-button, 5-button, etc. If
you're "thin as a rail," consider going in a double-breasted
coat; it will pad out your chest.
TALL AND BROAD
Stay with a single-breasted tuxedo. Double-breasted
coats make you look a more bulky. A shawl collar is a
good choice because it tends to streamline your shape. A
one or two button is preferred because it buttons closer
toward your waist line.
